Routers can throw WiFi signals a surprising distance in an open space, but the more walls, floors, doors, and windows that get between them and your devices, the more the router will struggle to provide a connection.
If you cannot get WiFi in a particular room, you’ll want to consider repositioning the router or purchasing an eero extender.
Positioning the router
When choosing where to place the router, you should consider what is nearby, if you enclose it in a cupboard behind a door or near other signal-emitting devices, the signal will be affected due to the interference.
Your router should be positioned centrally in your home and away from other devices, e.g. television or microwave. If you are limited to where your router can be placed, you can purchase a longer ethernet cable. You will need a high-quality CAT 6 cable as these cables can cope with our speeds. We recommend this one here.
Purchasing an extender
Depending on the style and size of your home a router alone may be unable to reach every corner. Things like Sandstone walls, wire-backed plasterboard, and glass walls can cause interference.
You will first want to check if the router is in an optimal position. If the router is already in the best place, it can be, but still not reaching every room, you will need to purchase WiFi extenders.
We recommend this entender from our partners at Eero. If you live in a substantial home with 5+ beds, we recommend you buy two of these extenders, which will have you covered nicely.
Speed equals distance. FALSE
Speed doesn’t equal distance. Speed, however, does provide you with the additional bandwidth required to build a solid and stable wireless internet connection throughout your home.
Adding an extender to your home will limit your overall wireless download and upload speeds to a maximum of 500Mb/s, but it will still provide excellent wireless speeds throughout your home. Your wireless speed is reduced as it splits and allocates the bandwidth to the different rooms and devices that need a signal. If you require 900mbs of the device, a CAT 6 wired connection will be required.
